...I heard Mackenzie say some things that helped me understand. Let me know what you think after reading my thoughts at the Personal Growth Productions web site.
Hey Michael, I remember something you said to me about putting light on a subject, how that can change things. I think that for the average person like me, to "shed light" on a scary secret (and share it) does help others to feel they are not alone, or the "only one this is happening to" and I think it can be helpful. It can also be counter productive if it is shared with the wrong person. For a celebrity, the number of people reached is enormous--which can mean it can do so much more good, but also have heavy consequences...whether it is done for the right or wrong reasons. I heard that the hotlines for incest and abuse were overwhelmed with calls. I don't know if that is true, but if it is, I think it is worth it. I have to believe she knew that she would get some pretty serious criticism, (although maybe not quite prepared for the size of it) and she must have gone through some heavy struggle and therapy just be able to say those words...jeez, I find it hard to talk about "incest" ... but to be able to admit how long it went on?
I agree, I cannot see any amount of money being worth it...and I do believe it is time someone spoke up about this. As she said, I know I am not the only one -- and I believe she is right.
I'm Michael Najarian, perhaps best known as the host of Mars/Venus Radio and my work with Personal Growth Productions that helped the world discover the Mars/Venus book that became so famous. In grad school, I studied Psychology and Counseling, and became known for my work on marriage, gender differences and communication. Now I'm hanging out with my kids; teaching, speaking, writing, staying fit, living and loving! My new web site and blog are first steps towards finding old friends, making new ones and sharing the many things I have learned along the way.
